Before choosing abortion for your unplanned pregnancy, ensure you understand the various procedures, side effects, and physical and emotional risks. Abortion is a serious and life-changing decision. Take time to learn as much as you can.

Types of Abortion

Like any medical procedure, it is crucial to be fully informed! Let’s sit down and discuss abortion procedures in a private, confidential setting. We are happy to answer your questions.

There are two main types of abortion: medical and surgical. How far along you are in your pregnancy determines which procedure, which is why an ultrasound scan is essential.

Medical Abortion

The abortion pill is a medical abortion. To qualify for this procedure, you must be ten weeks and 0 days from the first day of your last menstrual period. In Ohio, you cannot get an abortion past six weeks. Receiving the abortion pill through telemedicine is banned.

The abortion pill method uses two very powerful drugs. The first drug, mifepristone, thins the uterus lining by depriving it of progesterone. A lack of progesterone prevents the pregnancy from progressing.

The second drug, misoprostol, is taken 24-48 hours later and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

Side Effects and Risks

  • An incomplete abortion that may need to be followed by surgical abortion
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Digestive system discomfort
  • Severe cramping

Surgical Abortion

There are multiple surgical abortions depending on how far along you are in your pregnancy. Surgical abortions typically involve using a suction device inserted into the cervix to remove the pregnancy.

If you are farther along in your pregnancy, additional instruments such as a scraping tool or forceps are used to remove the remaining contents from the uterus.

Risks of Surgical Abortion

  • Damage to the womb or cervix
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Perforation of the uterus
  • Infection of the uterus or fallopian tubes
  • Scarring of the uterus
